If you follow our TEIN Facebook page, then you probably have already seen some photos of what looks to be some off-road vehicles. You were probably wondering what this had to do with TEIN, a company synonymous with lowering Hondas, or drifting, or Time Attack, or basically anything other than 4×4’s.
For the most part, you’re right. But, if you think about it, it’s not a far cry from TEIN’s start in the suspension business. Founded by a couple of rally competitors, TEIN knew there would be a demand for the perfect suspension for road conditions considered to be less than ideal for a daily commute (but for some reason perfect for racing). Considering the pounding that rally cars take, a properly built rally suspension can make a world of difference in performance.
Our Group N Dampers were developed directly through involvement in domestic and international rally (FIA PWRC, ERC, Rally America).

I guess it would be a natural progression for us to venture into the 4×4 suspension market, which is surprisingly very strong, especially overseas.
The pics that we shared are related to our involvement in the China Cross-Country Raid rally (think Paris-Dakar rally as a comparison).
Here’s a pic of one of the 4×4 developments we created for a customer.
Another 4×4 set
However, some setups are a bit more gnarly, requiring something more unique. Like this double damper setup.
Being that this type of racing was relatively new to us, we had engineers fly out to China to do testing with the teams and help them develop the suspension.
Other than this Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero, we also built suspension for a VW Tuareg
I also know that we’re putting our EDFC Active Pro to the test with a few of these 4×4’s. Talk about having the ultimate advantage- fully active suspension under some of the harshest conditions!
Although a new experience for us, the demands are still relatively the same, just with varying degrees of complexity. So, 4×4 suspension is definitely within the realm of possibilities for us. However, I must make mention that we do not manufacture leaf springs or torsion springs. Through our Specialized Damper Service and our involvement in motorsports, TEIN always looks to bring our very own technological advancements in getting the best out of every racing environment.
TEchnical INnovation- that’s what we’re all about!

We are proud to work with Dynamic Autosports on releasing a new suspension offering for the Honda S2000 market. Here is the new Gruppe-S dampers.
A take on the older TEIN Type RS dampers, the Gruppe-S does without the full-length adjustable damper bodies, like our Super Racing dampers, but still includes 2-way damping adjustment. Speaking of damping adjustment, Dynamic Autosports opted for TEIN’s Advance Needle design, which is slowly finding its way into the TEIN product line (currently being used on the Street Advance, Street Flex, and Mono Sport damper kits). This gives each click a much broader damping change within the same 16 click range most all of our damping adjustable coilovers have.
Monotube construction is built around lightweight steel damper bodies coated in our proprietary ZT coating, giving this set the ultimate in corrosion resistance. Newer spring seat, delrin thrust washer, and seat lock design in combination with the ZT coated threaded damper body offer smooth height adjustment.
Also included are pillowball upper mounts for front and rear with coaxial upper spring seats. The benefit of this setup is that the suspension will have full articulation throughout the full range of suspension stroke. As the suspension compresses, the angle at which the damper is positioned relative to the mounting point (shock tower and lower control arm) changes, due to the arc of the lower control arm. This takes out any uneven load on the spring, keeping it parallel to the damper body at all times. Also, the spherical ball joint in the mount produces consistent damper performance (no rubber isolators to cause damping hysteresis). In other words the damper is allowed to its job in controlling compression and rebound throughout the complete stroke length.
The Gruppe-S damper kit also includes helper springs. Main springs are sold separately, giving the end-user the option of choosing the spring rate that best suits their needs. Out of the box, the dampers have an ideal spring rate range of 12-14kg, but can also be used for 10kg or 16kg by simply adjusting damping force accordingly.. This makes it an ideal setup for a daily driver with occasional track duty, but still have plenty of flexibility for a full-blown track car. Of course, like all TEIN dampers, we can revalve the coilovers for spring rates beyond this range.

As you may have seen through our blog before, we offer a Specialized Damper Program. This allows a customer to create a one-off suspension kit made to their specifications. A great option for those customer who can’t find a readily available suspension kit for their vehicle, whether it be because it is an uncommon vehicle or it is a vintage vehicle that no longer has aftermarket support. It is a unique offering that gives the customer endless tuning possibilities, and all made with TEIN quality!
We’ve also been able to do custom lowering springs through this program. We know, that sounds a bit confusing because “Specialized Damper” implies that we can make the dampers only. We’ll work on that name. We do like using the term “SPD” if that helps! Nevertheless, we are able to create anything a customer is looking for, short of custom torsion and leaf springs.
What we never really brush up on is our ability to create individual components. Just recently, we had some lower knuckle brackets made for a Scion FR-S which was already using our Mono Flex coilovers. The person wanted some more ride height adjustment, as the knuckle bracket was already maxed at it’s highest setting (lowest ride height). But, he also wanted some camber adjustment from the bracket, a feature included on our Super Racing coilovers for MacPherson Strut type suspension. For those applications we include a new upper knuckle bolt with off set washers to allow a few degrees of camber adjustment. Not exactly a cheap option because of the components needed, but definitely possible to create.
Since this is a custom order, it still takes some time for TEIN Japan’s SPD (Specialized Damper) section to create the components. However, if it is a time-sensitive job, please contact us for quotation and we’ll see what we can do!
The nicest thing about this type of service isn’t that you can create your own custom pieces, but we build them to match your current suspension. As you may be able to see, our Mono Flex dampers use a different shade of green than our Street Basis, Street Advance, and Street Flex suspension. We can do custom colors by request, too. However, that does cost extra. But, who doesn’t like green?!
Anyway, please give us a call if you have any requests for custom damper components. We’re here to help!
When discussing the original EDFC, I sometimes would run into some wishful individuals wishing that a system would have the capability of adjusting itself. When we released the EDFC Active, our electronic damping system which allows the front and rear dampers to be adjusted automatically based on the vehicle speed and G forces applied. A lot were impressed and in awe, but still we had individuals who complained that it was still not good enough. Now with the release of the EDFC Active Pro, no one can say a word.
We received our shipment of the new TEIN hoodie and cap today!
First is our new cap (Part# TN003-005F, msrp $20)
These caps are a one-size-fits-all!
And, our new hoodie (part# Tn025-002S/M/L/XL/XXL, msrp $60)
and the backside
These new items will make their first appearance at this weekend’s Formula Drift in Long Beach. So please be sure to stop by the TEIN booth and get your new hoodie and cap!
We recently have decided upon the release of a new hoody and Snap-back cap as a replacement to our previous hoody and flame cap which were discontinued.
Many consumers had inquired about the release or re-release of the hoody which had us thinking whether to go ahead consider the re-release or bring out a new design. As for the flame cap, lets just say that it wasnt as popular as out FlexFit caps and kinda needed an upgrade. Both product renderings have not yet been finalized but an idea of what can be expected for both would be shown below.
The release is expected within the next two weeks and is definetely a long awaited for the hoody and unexpected release for the cap. Check our website for updates.
We’ve already had our popular Super Racing coilover kit available for the R35 GT-R. The TEIN group was quick to jump into the development on that car’s suspension from the day it was released internationally. However, we knew that the sales of the GT-R wouldn’t necessarily take the world over right away. After all, it is a relatively expensive car.
Now in 2014 we’re looking to go back to redeveloping our already race proven setup.
With pre-owned GT-R’s now available at somewhat more reasonable prices, new owners are now able to put some money into enhancing an already well-balanced factory super car. Leave it to us to find a way to improve its suspension, which is what we do anyway!
For this year, we’re working with our good friends at Evasive Motorsports, who have recently acquired a GT-R. We’re pleased to see that they contacted us for suspension assistance. As aforementioned, we were looking to redo the damper valving and possibly spring rates. So it was good timing for us!
While it’s great to be working with Evasive Motorsports on the Super Racing development, we also look to put our newly released and available EDFC Active Pro to work on this car. TEIN Japan has already received praise on this new EDFC offering, with drivers reporting drastic improvement in driving and reduced lap times (one claim of -30 seconds lap time sounded too good to be true, but we’ll take it!). Now we’re looking to get feedback from our North American customers.
Please stay posted with us on the redevelopment on R35 Super Racing suspension and for our EDFC Active Pro testing!
