New Takata Product Line

Takata_Harnesses_985x630

Takata had actually released a new line of belts at the beginning of this year.  The new lines have some more options available from the color types of the original green color to the new black colors. The belts would also offer either a two and three inch wide belt in the choice of a standard snap on clip or a new bolt on style which can just be bolted into the existing seat belt bolts.

The belt application will vary from the tuner who’s looking to add some bling to his daily driven project but still be street legal who can use the Drift Series belts, to the professional/dedicated racer looking for something to allow the adaptability of the HANS device available in the Race 4 and Race 6 Series belts. Regardless of what you may be looking the new Takata lines would be a little more budget friendly and customizable. For further details of the new belts available  please be sure to visit the weblink provided below. Also please be sure to visit Takata’s website for any Takata installation tech info as well as other new Takata products releases.

Fitment Assumptions

I can not tell you how many times we have encountered fitment assumptions with our products whether it be the lowering spring fitment on similar chassis vehicles or year model descriptions.

It seems as though regardless of what it details on our website or other website, the assumption is that “It should work.” I can honestly say that verification of the fitment should be checked with us prior to considering to use the product on the application. If we detail that we can not confirm the fitment, we also recommend checking with the dealer for component fitment between models.

Still, even if are able to confirm some parts fitment with the dealer, since there had been no physical testing of the product the installation would be done at your own discretion. Ride height values and ride quality may just go right out the window.

Don’t always trust what your cousin’s, uncle’s, friends, sister’s, brother’s co-worker posted in a thread. One call or email can save you on any headaches.

Going JDM!!

For a while now I’ve been an American muscle type of guy.  I’m talking Camaro’s, Mustangs, Challengers, Novas, Chevelle’s, etc.  I’ve owned both a Chevy and a Ford. I mean, who doesn’t love the sound of a Flowmaster muffled muscle car when flooring the pedal on that v8?!  I was also a fan of big rims, bright lights, ear drum popping bass, and eye sore-type paint jobs. But, maybe working here at TEIN has shoo-ken my head and opened my eyes  to a new scene.

I’ve always liked imports, but never enough to buy one. This time around I decided to go “JDM” and join the club. I figured, shoot, I’ll give it a try.  This time around I picked up an Altima Coupe. Nothing to make you jump out your seat but definitely something different than a Chevy.  And yes of course, I’m going to slam it on TEIN!!! I’m not the type of guy to keep a car stock. They’re like toys to me. I’m sure many of you out there will agree. So I’m definitely upgrading what I can. Like, OMG, who keeps their car stock??(lol).

Below are some slammed A/C’s out there.

We will be testing the S.Tech lowering springs on the 4 cylinder model coupe for fitment and ride height confirmation. Coilovers have been confirmed fitment as the suspensions ride height can be adjust to compensate for the weight difference of the 6 cylinder model. We will keep everyone updated with the findings of the testing.

A Series Of Events!!

This year you can catch us at several events. The first one on our list (now scratched off ) was the 2013 Formula Drift season opening day in Down Town Long Beach. It was a very, very busy day. We met a lot of dealers and customers that stopped by to say “What’s Up!!”. Visit the link below to view photos from this event.

Inked Up!!!

Through out the years we have received endless support for our product line. Some customers have stickers on there cars window, others have banners on there back panels. Some walk around with our umbrellas while others carry our back pack over there shoulders.

However other customers have decided to rock TEIN on another level. They have tattooed our logo. Thank you for your support and your ultimate demonstration of loyalty.

Maintaining Your Investment

We know the purchase of coil-over kits can be an expensive investment, whether you’re buying our product line or a competitor’s. Some have to save up for the purchase while others can buy at their leisure. Nevertheless, maintaining your investment should never be overlooked.

Dirt and debris can potentially be caught in between the seat lock and threads. This can cause the seat locks to “Freeze” if you will, making it very difficult to remove or adjust your ride height. Even worse, dirt/debris can get caught in between the piston rod and seal prematurely damaging the damper(s). The seal will then eventually tear, causing the gas and oil to be released, making the damper(s) unusable and you as a customer very upset and irritated.

We recommend our coil-over systems to be periodically cleaned. You can hose down the dampers or put some love and elbow grease in to it and really detail them. Particularly focus on the piston rod and threads on the shock body. We also recommend to overhaul your damper(s) every 35,000 miles or three years. The internal gas, oil, and seals will be replaced. Doing so will prolong the life span of the dampers.

Keep in mind that upgrading your suspension and not maintaining it is like buying a new Porsche and never washing it. Or getting a new paint job and not waxing it. I can go on and on with similarities.

With that said,……Save your self a headache and  clean your darn suspension!!!

Oh, and of course, if you have any questions regarding overhauls, please feel free to shoot over an inquiry to tus_sales@tein.com!

Congrats to Ken Suen of Sportcar Motion!

Redline Time Attack had their season opener this past weekend (February 16th & 17th). As always, teams that compete in other Time Attack series such as Global Time Attack and Super Lap Battle, find their way into this series to best their times.

Sportcar Motion’s Ken Suen, owner and driver of the FA5 Civic Si lovingly referred to as “Big Red” was out for blood. Last time we covered this car during last November’s Super Lap Battle season finale, mechanical issues prevented him from doing any better that 2 minutes around Buttonwillow’s 13CW road course.

With some new front aero work, as well as a new powerplant, Ken was sure to make this event count. And that he did!

Under the Street FF class, Ken was able to stop the timer at an amazing 1:58.921! Yes, Street Class, Front-wheel drive! Super fast, and most importantly, the new record to beat!

Ken Suen (Custom) (Custom)

We’re glad to report that Ken continues to use an out-of-the-box Mono Flex setup for his car. We’ll see if any changes need to be made as he continues to cut his lap times down. SCM Big Red 2 (Custom)

Once again, congratulations to Ken Suen and the team at Sportcar Motion for yet another memorable run for victory!

Made in Japan, Developed For The U.S. Market

As some of you may know, we do development specifically for the U.S. market. We’ve mentioned this before in our blog. A lot of people wonder why even bother with this step, especially if the same car is being sold overseas. Won’t those products fit just the same? Won’t it have identical ride and handling characteristics? Well, that may not always be the case.

Many countries have different standards for their vehicles to conform to, and as such, vehicle manufacturers have to comply with whatever regulations are in place for that specific region. In the U.S., crash safety is a heavily monitored factor in vehicle construction. And because of this, vehicles designated for the U.S. market tend to be a bit heavier with the safety equipment needed to pass the stringent crash standards we have. That’s not to say that vehicles overseas are not very strong or reliable, by the way.

Because of these differences, we must test our products to make sure that not only fitment is correct, but that our desired ride heights, whether for lowering spring or height-adjustable coil-over, are to our standards. And in some cases, we do have to make parts unique to the U.S. market only.

It is a time-consuming process, if you can imagine. Since all products are made in Japan, there are several steps in getting prototype suspension parts made, then tested on a U.S. market car, and if all goes well, we can go right into production. In some cases, we have to retest from the first prototype if it’s not to our standard. *This is one reason why we don’t guarantee that a customer (who has loaned us their vehicle for our testing) will get product from us after testing- we don’t want to give them a product that may not meet our standards for ride quality and overall adjustability (if applicable). In those cases, we normally have to retest with another prototype. Once it meets our criteria for whichever model, only then can we continue with production.

What is difficult is gauging the market’s needs for performance suspension. With our various lines of suspensions available, each one has to meet criteria we believe fits our customers expectations. Of course, every person is unique in their own right. So to say that we can fulfill the expectations for 100% of our market is difficult to say. But we work on customer feedback and that helps us tremendously in determining what a customer is looking for in suspension. Above all, our main goal is to produce a high-quality product with great performance for its line at a cost that is reasonable. Because we cannot meet all customers’ expectations, we also offer our revalving service, allowing the customer to have the dampers reworked for a spring rate they desire. This service is more common to our customers utilizing their suspension for competition use only, but it is not limited to these people. We’ve modified off-the-shelf dampers for customers who altered their vehicles with items such as sound equipment (some cases, as much as 300lbs additional weight!) and used higher rate springs and revalved dampers. Sometimes the opposite is needed- vehicle lightening can require softer rate springs and damper valving to correct these changes, as it will affect overall vehicle dynamics.

By the way, offering this overhaul service (standard or revalve) for dampers also helps to maintain the longevity of the dampers. We recommend damper inspections every 30k miles.

There are some instances where we are working around a tight schedule to complete testing in time to make TEIN Japan’s production schedule. This is especially the case with newer vehicles already released. We try hard to make sure we have product in time to get it out to our customers. But sometimes it is still difficult to get the job done in time. As mentioned earlier, some prototypes need to be redone before we proceed with production.

We also have some opportunities to test at local race tracks and develop for various vehicle configurations. Some of our engineers dedicate their time for specific race teams for many forms of racing we are involved with internationally, giving us an extensive amount of information that can be useful in helping our customers determine what works best for them.

So it is a timely process for us. Although it would be easiest to carry over product developed for overseas, and much cheaper for us too, it isn’t the most practical solution in making sure we produce the best suspension kits for the money.

One Hot Day and One Big Container!!

‘Sup Guys?! As most of you know we get at least one container full of our wonderful products delivered each month straight from TEIN Headquarters in Japan. We have had as many as three containers come in just one month alone. That’s a lot of product! We received this month’s container this past Friday, July 20, 2012 and man, was it hot!

Luckily our dock does have some shade from the sun, for the most part. So it helps the container stay way cooler than if the sun would hit it directly.

Here we have Jon (also known as “THE FOOT”) posing for the picture. Jon works in a different department here at TEIN but still gives us a hand from time to time.

The pictures above and below show our warehouse aisles right before we start unloading the container but as the day goes on, the aisles get more and more crowded with product..

Once the container is safely unloaded our job is not yet completely finished. During and after the offload process we use a product scanner to track the product quantities being received on the container. We then download this data onto a PC using our proprietary software to detail all items scanned. This is then checked with the order list to make sure we received the right quantity as we ordered. If everything checks out fine, we are finally done! We tend to ship most of these newly received items right back out to our dealers well before we get to restock our shelves. Only after we fulfill customer orders can we then put away some remaining items and get our warehouse cleaned in time for the next inbound shipment from Japan!
