Wheel Fitment Complaint

It seems as though lately we’ve been having a high increase in complaints from consumers about tire rubbing.
Now this rubbing encountered is not necessarily coming from the original OE wheel and tires but rather aftermarket wheel and tire set ups.

With this in mind a common sense factor should be taken into consideration but is always thrown out the window as the car must look sweet with an aggressive offset. Bear in mind that not just any wheel and tire set up can be used on any vehicles.

Many consumers that do achieve the desired fitment would also require further modifications to the wheel well and other suspension components. The rubbing has nothing to do with the lowering spring or coilover set up as it never was any type of issue upon the initial testing of the vehicle with the OE wheels. Now the lowering spring or coilover set up may not be to the consumers expectations, either allowing for too much travel when weight is placed on a particular corner of the vehicle causing the rubbing, or not enough to bring the wheel and fender clearance to the desired place.

I, too, have ran across this dilemma thinking that the wheel and tire set up would be sufficient enough for the drop I was looking to maintain. With the same issue encountered, rather than blame others for my error, I decided to make further modifications as to allow for the fitment. Let’s just say that it still encountered rubbing at full suspension compression but worked well enough for me.

So, before you decide to lower your vehicle and get new wheels, consider certain factors such as wheel size (diameter, width, and offset) as well as tire size (width and outside diameter). These factors can affect overall wheel fitment and can cause problems with rubbing if not taken into consideration.

TEIN USA Delivers to West Coast Customs

It’s not often that you get to see TEIN on the tv screen unless it’s regarding Rally America, Formula Drift, FIA European Rally Championship, or something else along those lines. Even then, we tend to keep to ourselves tucked away in our own little pocket. Instead, we focus on manufacturing the products that continue to make the motorsports world go round.

But, every now and then we’ll be invited to participate on some television programs. Previously, we took part in the televised series Fine Tuned. This was a very similar approach to the show Overhaulin’, but aimed around the “tuner car” demographic. That was actually kinda fun!

Our most recent television appearance was with the West Coast Custom crew, taking part on a Scion FR-S build for Ryan Friedlinghaus Jr..

Since we already had product available for the FR-S, and since it’s a vehicle that continues to do very well for us, it was kind of a no-brainer to participate on this project. We had just launched the newer Street Flex coilovers and we also had EDFC Active. This was a great opportunity to get this new product out to West Coast Customs.

When we were contacted by Scott at West Coast Customs, we quickly got the parts ready and dropped it off to them. It’s funny- the whole process of taking the product to them and explaining what we brought them was just as shown on tv. I guess it is truly a reality! Haha!

A quick rundown of our Street Flex coilovers and EDFC Active.

Anyway, after a quick rundown of what we were providing them, we let them get at it by themselves. The project car was only beginning and they had a lot of areas to knock out before tackling the suspension.

Crunch time to get the car built before going to paint. Our friend Troy from Five Axis here helping them get the Five:AD body kit installed.

Fortunately, as many of you customer’s know, our products are a relatively straightforward endeavor right out of the box. The Street Flex is a complete swap of the factory dampers, also including their own upper mounts. It simply requires unbolting the stock stuff and bolting up our coilovers, then tightening everything to the correct torque specs (and final alignment to be done afterwards). Looks like the WCC guys didn’t have any issues getting that done!

West Coast Customs posted up photos of the car on their Facebook, following the airing of the episode on this build and the SEMA Show launch.

2014 Honda Civic Coilover Caution

Hello all,

We wanted to give warning to owners of 2014 Honda Civic’s. Not too long ago, we conducted some more testing on the late model Civic, only to find that coilover fitment is not the same. This is due to a difference in knuckle/hub design from the 2012-2013 over the 2014 models.

As you can see, the bolt holes have a different alignment. That means that an attempt to install any of the GSHC0- coilovers will not be able get the correct camber angle, among other issues.

Because of the differences, our current line of coilovers, the following list of part numbers will be listed as 2012-2013 Honda Civic only.

-GSHC0-1UAS2 (STREET BASIS DAMPER KIT, FB6/FG4

-GSHC0-2UAS2 (STREET ADVANCE DAMPER KIT, FB6/FG4)

-GSHC0-5UAS1 (STREET FLEX DAMPER KIT, FB6/FG4)

New Products from TEIN USA

It’s not uncommon for us to get calls from both dealers and customers regarding new products for specific vehicles. Typically, we make a new product guide every time we receive some new items from Japan. However, this information usually only goes direct to the dealers, and some dealers don’t necessarily release this information to their customers.

But, we still try to make new product announcements for the public to see right on our homepage at www.tein.com!

At the bottom left of this picture is our “New Announcements”, which we update with any new information we have. Whether it is TEIN product related or even Defi or Carbing, we post it right here, and we also link the information to the appropriate product page so that you can get more information on it.

Again, we update this whenever we get new product in with our shipments from Japan. As much as possible, we try to update this information well before we receive it, but we get 2 shipments per month and sometimes we just try to consolidate all new items for that month into one announcement. It’s kept us pretty busy, especially with multiple vehicle-specific applications being released for the new Street Flex and Mono Sport damper kits.

We certainly hope that helps you look for the product you need for your specific vehicle. That’s not to say that we don’t appreciate your calls. As always, you are definitely free to do so!!!

2014 IS350 Testing

We are happy to inform everyone that we are currently in the works of testing both TEIN coilovers and lowering springs. Along with the restyled body the new IS350’s suspension has also taken on a different design making the previous model IS suspension not interchangeable. With these changes, most of the kits used are currently prototypes, which are matched to what has the best ride quality. Once confirmed, the best overall component and spring coiling design the kits are then placed under mass production.

Products expected to be release for this application are the the S.Tech and High Tech lowering springs, Street Advance and Street Flex coilovers. Product release date has been scheduled for early to mid-November for both the S.Tech and High Tech lowering springs, early to mid-November for the Street Advance, and early to mid-January for the Street Flex. For release updates please check on our website as info regarding new product releases or product information is updated every month.

RallySport Direct’s Review of TEIN Street Flex Dampers!

RallySport Direct is no newcomer to the aftermarket parts game. In fact, we’ve showcased them on our blog before. Since then, they’ve continued to expand and have cemented themselves as a top player in the Midwest. They’ve been great supporters for the TEIN brand for many years now! We’re glad to see that they’ve stuck around and made a great name for themselves.

Like many of our authorized TEIN dealers, RallySport Direct likes to race what they sell. The staff at RallySport are quite active at local track days at Miller Motorsports Park, so they may sure every part they sell results in noticeable gains in performance. This gives them the edge in being able to listen to their customers and get them exactly what they need. That kind of service is a bit rare these days. It’s great to see that they pride themselves in their work.

Take a look at their website www.rallysportdirect.com, and you will find a plethora of parts by category and brand. Being that they like to race what they sell, they’re also quite fond of making their own videos for all these products. Their What’s In The Box videos are great for customers trying to get a better look at items they may be interested in getting, but don’t know what to expect. Sometimes, videos are just easier to understand!

RallySport Direct took our latest offering for 2013, the Street Flex dampers, and decided to install a set for their very own project Subaru BRZ. The “Albino Rhino”, as it has been dubbed, has made quick use of RallySport’s inventory, and the staff have been documenting this vehicle’s build progress.

2013 Tokyo Auto Salon

We have started this 2013 year strong with our newly released Street Flex and EDFC ACTIVE.

Unfortunately TEIN USA was not able to attend the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon show in Japan (physically), but we still attended the show in the form of our parent company, TEIN Japan, and our photo taken earlier this month. Thank God for the web and media as that would be our only source for consumers to check out those neck breaking cars.

Anywho, we had our new products on display, along with our knowledgeable Japanese staff to answer any questions that enthusiast had.

They must have been swamped with questions with regards to our newly released product line. Shoot, here in the US our phones don’t stop ringing, and our inbox is full of inquiries. I’m sure that the next event we attend in the US will have lines longer than Best Buy’s on Black Friday.

Overall it was a great show. The consumers’ feedback was as we anticipated. Our new product line is being received with open arms and we couldn’t ask for more (well… except for more orders, of course!!! LOL). Street Flex?

Now there has been a lot of talk about our New Street Flex coil-over system. TEIN Japan has had a head start on getting the product launch, and it has been generating a lot of inquiries for us stateside. I’m here to share the new specs and information about the system with you.

So, let’s start of with the similarities of the Flex and Street Flex applications.

Full Length adjustable
Twin tube structure
16 level linear damping force adjustment.
Exclusively designed upper mounts are included for some applications.

And now for the Improvements-

Damping force adjustment with Advance Needle. “ADVANCE Needle”, which is proven effective in STREET ADVANCE, for 16-level damping force adjustment feature (compression & rebound together) widens damping force adjustment range; Nearly 200% compared to existing products! Greater adjustment range gives you more setting capabilities and thus makes it easier than ever to find the desired setting.
Improved Durability. Improved, redesigned oil seal and ring nut with dust-discharge groove on side are used. Such new and advanced parts improve the durability, preventing contamination by foreign matters which can lead to the reduction of product life. Final assembly of shock absorbers is now done in a dedicated clean room, which is almost equivalent to operating room, to thoroughly eliminate the cause of oil leak. Room pressure is kept under control to shut out dust & dirt and all workers entering the room must go through an air shower to make sure all the assembly work is done in completely clean air.
Tough anti-rust treatment. The patented “2-layer/1-bake” treatment using anti-rust powder paint is applied on top of the blast finish to the base surface. On the shell case, TEIN’s self-developed one-of-a-kind “ZT Coating” is applied, for tougher protection against chipping, often caused by deflected pebbles/debris. We are confident that people living in snowfall area or near sea shores will be very satisfied.
Smooth ride height adjustment. STREET FLEX has adopted new wrought aluminum spring seats and low-friction hard-resin thrust washers. These effectively reduce the friction with springs, caused during ride height adjustment, and makes it easier to adjust the ride height with pre-load on the springs.
The ZT Coating, a super low-friction fluorine resin coating, is tightly baked onto the shell case surface in-house. This special coating provides superior protection against rust and high lubricity, keeping a smooth adjustment for a long period.

High-Quality yet Affordable!

Fundamental structure, persistently being improved and matured over the past 15 years, is now reviewed in terms of VA & VE and 40% of its existing components are re-designed. With this, the durability against oil leaks and/or aged deterioration is well improved and the operating noise is reduced. Also, the introduction of new production processes improves the productive efficiency and hence the overall cost is well reduced. This new product is sure to satisfy wide variety of users; from novice to expert.
