2014. A Year With a New Start and Some New Ideas!

Happy  New Year to you all!

We’re excited for what’s to come this year. TEIN Japan has a fresh slate starting their operations in a brand new factory (still in Yokohama).

TEIN JP New Factory

It doesn’t end there, though. Of course we always want to add something new to the TEIN line, so we’re looking forward to the release of the TEIN Mono Sports coilovers (two types: Sport & Sedan) and another EDFC Active addition- EDFC Active Pro! We’ll add more details on these products as they become available. So far, one staff member has already posted about the Mono Sport dampers.

There are other developments within the TEIN group that are super big, and super confidential for now.

In any case, be assured that TEIN is continuing to grow to be a leader in performance suspension!

Defi Advance BF USDM Gauges Soon to Arrive!

We’ve already mentioned about the new Defi Advance BF USDM gauges. Now we just wait in anticipation for their arrival on the U.S. shore!

Once again, these gauges differ from the current Advance BF by having readouts in PSI for pressure gauges and Fahrenheit for temperature gauges.  You no longer have to attempt converting over metric gauge readings in your head, like some of us had to do!

Current ETA is early January 2014.

We highly suggest you contact your nearest authorized TEIN dealer and get your Defi Advance BF USDM gauges ordered now!

TEIN MONO SPORT DAMPERS

Recently TEIN has been releasing there new updated version of our already popular coilover kits.

The BASIC coilover kit has been updated and released as the STREET BASIS.

The Super Streets have been superseded by the STREET ADVANCE.

And our Flex damper has been superseded by the STREET FLEX.

All of these have been updated with new internal components and some minor changes to the outer portion as well. We’ve also been able to reduce MSRP a significant amount to make it much more affordable for our customers! You can find all the new product information through this link http://www.tein.com/products/index.html

Well now it’s time for the Mono Flex to have a change as well.  They have been finding new ways to have one of the best suspensions in the market for a very reasonable price.  Starting in 2014 TEIN will be releasing two variations of the MONO Sport.

clearmodel

The MONO SPORT and the MONO SPORT TOURING Coilovers. Both lines will carry our newly designed Upright Strong Tube for strut type suspensions. With this newly design, it reduces friction using a revised internal lubrication method. With this design we are able to have the click assembly for the dampening force adjustment on the top, making the adjustments or installation of the optional EDFC/EDFC Active much easier.

The system still offers the 16 levels of compression and rebound together, but now it is equipped with exclusively-designed “ADVANCE M.S.V.” With the use of “ADVANCE M.S.V.”, damping force adjustable range is made about three times wider, yet superior damping force characteristics are maintained in all parts to improve steering response, road ability and traction performance.

These are just some of the few revisions done to the MONO Sport line for further information on the system please follow this link. http://www.tein.co.jp/e/products/mono_sport.html

3-Way Adjustable Dampers

While not known for having 3-Way adjustable dampers on our shelves available for customers, we do have the technology to add that to our 2-Way adjustable kits, such as our Super Racing dampers.

For those not familiar with 3-way adjustable suspension, it adds a high-speed compression adjustment. That’s the third extra “way” you can tune your suspension.

What’s the benefit?

Well, for one, there is no one setup that is ideal for all parts of the race track. Some portions of track may be relatively smooth, while other portions may have a rumble strip that you have to attack to put or keep you on the correct side of the racing line. So, with having both low-speed and high-speed compression adjustment, the end-user can have a setting that maintains vehicle posture through low-speed bumps where weight transferring isn’t too much of a concern, and on the high-speed bump, the wheel/tire for that specific corner can absorb a much larger impact and deflect quickly, reducing weight transfer and unloading on that wheel/tire. Maintaining tire traction is paramount, and having a low and high-speed compression setting is a huge benefit, providing a form of  “digressive” valving and a sense of duality for your suspension.

Smooth circuits may not seem to take much advantage of having a low and high-speed compression adjustment. In reality, it still makes plenty of sense to have such tuning ability. Again, maximizing tire grip by maintaining tire contact with the pavement means more time for the driver to hold their driving line and stay accelerating.

Again, maximizing tire grip by maintaining tire contact with the pavement means more time for the driver to hold their driving line and stay accelerating as long as possible.

This type of tuning is super critical in the world of rally racing, where TEIN engineers have been able to develop our 3+1 tuning (includes hydraulic bump stop) on gravel/dirt courses. Maintaining tire traction is even more important here as any wheel not on the ground translate into having no acceleration. Having such long stroke suspension for rally alone isn’t enough to maintain that traction. Superior ability to tune the suspension for such rough terrain will allow the driver to keep their foot on the gas pedal as long as they can.

Rally is a great example of how critical it is to maintain traction. Suspension tuning for both low and high-speed compression makes a vast difference in how well the tire stays planted while doing much to dissipate weight transfer.

Tuning can be a little tricky for 3-way adjustable dampers, which is why it isn’t something readily offered as a kit. Not all customers need the extra feature, let alone know how to tune it. But, once you have a few track sessions and get the suspension dialed in for both low and high-speed compression, it can make your driving experience feel rather seamless.

Stateside, Evasive Motorsports has applied our 3-way adjustable dampers for the rear of their Time Attack Mitsubishi Evo IX. We’ve been able to help them dial in their suspension for the somewhat harsh Buttonwillow Raceway (here’s a link to some in-car footage to show you what it is like).

If you have a set of our 2-way adjustable dampers and want to make it a 3-way, give us a call and we can help you with that!

Tech: EDFC Active Guide Part 1

IMG_6748

New to 2013, our EDFC Active system brings forth a higher and more enjoyable experience we expect on all of our products.  Not only can users adjust dampening levels instantly while sitting in the driver seat, the EDFC Active is also capable of automatic damper adjustments based on speed and G-forces making it truly one of a kind.  However, in order to properly utilize the maximum capabilities of this system, parameters must be set so the computer will know what to do at any given times.

Counterfeit DEFI Gauges

It has been brought to our attention that there are multiple counterfeit Defi gauges circulating the market.  Please be extra careful if you come across an unbelievable price for a new set of Defi gauges.

Counterfeit items are not manufactured to FCC standards. They can burn out your electrical system along with other potential problems.

We cannot stress enough to only purchase from TEIN authorized dealers. Visit the link below to locate the nearest dealer to you.

AUTHORIZED TEIN DEALER LIST

There may seem to be subtle differences between a counterfeit and authentic Defi gauge, components, and its packaging. They’re subtle enough to go unnoticed. Again, they may look original. But, under a keen eye, you can notice the differences. Below are some pictures courtesy of Defi. Please take a close look the these pictures. Also below is a link to Defi’s website detailing more counterfeit vs original photos.

Street Basis for the Honda Element

We recently went forward with testing of the Street Basis coilover which will replace the Basic. The Basic kit had some consumer concerns when it came down to the kits valving and also spring rates. Many consumers sent in the dampers to have the rears revalved to both a more aggressive spring rate and valving to match the spring rates. This time around further testing had been made to find the optimal ride quality for this kit, and being that another TEIN Staff member (Andres) and I already had the vehicles with an excessive modification to the dampers and the other in its stock form, we had a chance to throw in our own 2 cents.

The initial valving of the Basic was softer than expected for the rear. We both felt that the spring rate and valving should be changed to be more aggressive possible matching our past experiences. The first new spec was not to most of our expectations, not just coming from me but other staff who had a change to test drive the vehicle. They changed it many more times even asking to use my vehicle for the testing as it differed in ride feel from the SC models. Finally they came to a damping spec which, to my surprise, was extremely smooth and balanced for the spring rates used. Let’s just put it this way, the rear would actually still be carrying the same spring rate as the Basic but the fronts were change.

The Street Basis is expected to be released around mid to late February and would be priced around $900.00 MSRP but not confirmed yet. For future updates on the kits release date and pricing, please check back with us on the TEIN websites “New Applications” tab or follow us on Facebook.

Overhaul Season

What’s up, all?!! Just a friendly reminder that the winter season is the ideal season to submit your dampers to us for an overhaul.  To those who don’t know what an overhaul means, basically we freshen up the dampers to a like new condition.

The standard turnaround time is between three to five weeks. The repair time frame depends on the condition of the dampers.  Dampers with less damage are typically overhauled under two weeks. However,  repairs to severely damaged dampers can be prolonged up to five weeks.  Unfortunately, we cannot confirm a repair time frame, nor exact overhaul total until the dampers are inspected.
