The New, More Affordable STREET BASIS Z & STREET ADVANCE Z Coilovers!!!

As we had already mentioned, development has started on our FLEX Z coilovers, a more affordable offering of our popular STREET FLEX coilovers. But, we haven’t stopped there with new products for 2015!

At around the same time we start bringing in our FLEX Z coilovers (mid-Spring), we should also have a few applications of our STREET BASIS Z & STREET ADVANCE Z coilovers! However, we’re not too sure the timing, as the new STREET BASIS Z & STREET ADVANCE Z will be coming from our newly established TEIN China plant.

The difference between current STREET BASIS and STREET ADVANCE coilovers from the new “Z” line is that the Z line are non-rebuildable coilovers. Again, this follows in suit to the STREET FLEX -> FLEX Z changes. All other features of the two entry-level coilover lines are the same.

STREET BASIS Z is strictly a ride height adjustable kit. This makes it a perfect setup for the daily driver looking for an increase in handling performance without compromising comfort for everyday use. For many of you considering a lowering spring + performance shock absorber combination, the STREET BASIS Z makes even more sense as we select appropriate spring rates and valve our dampers to match. No guesswork on the end-users part in trying to match one brand of springs to another brand of shock absorbers. The added height adjustment feature allows the end-user the ability to adjust ride height to their preference, something that lowering springs lack. Being that most vehicles are slightly unbalanced from left to right sides, that means you can easily adjust the ride height so that each corner is even from their opposing sides.

STBZ

STREET ADVANCE Z takes the ride height adjustability of the STREET BASIS Z line and adds 16-way damping adjustment. So, not only do you get a matched spring and damper setting, you now have the ability to tune the dampers to meet your driving conditions. Roads seem a bit rough? Soften up the damping. Glass smooth highways? Crank the damping to a stiffer setting. You get all that and everything in between.  STREET ADVANCE Z is also compatible with our EDFC systems (some STREET ADVANCE Z coilover kits may require extension kits for compatibility), giving you a completely adaptable suspension kit based on your driving conditions/characteristics! That’s a feature that not even all sports luxury cars have, and our setup is at a much more affordable price!!!

STAZ

Like the FLEX Z line, these new STREET BASIS Z  & STREET ADVANCE Z coilovers have a very appealing starting price! STREET BASIS Z comes in at $400 while STREET ADVANCE Z comes in at $500!!! Those are unheard of starting prices for a TEIN coilover!

And, just like the FLEX Z coilovers, replacement parts will be made readily available! If your STREET BASIS Z or STREET ADVANCE Z dampers start feeling worn, you can purchase replacement dampers! No need to send them into us for a rebuild since these are fully sealed, non-rebuildable dampers! That will save you some money, and most importantly, extended downtime! We’ll help to get your car back on the road as quickly as possible!

Again, the only major difference is that the new “Z” line of dampers are non-rebuildable.

Internally, we continue to use our ADVANCE NEEDLE for increased per-click damping adjustment. This translates into greater damping change for each click of the 16-way adjuster, making it easier to find the perfect damping setting. Our high performance damper oil, the same kind we use in our race dampers (Gr.N, Super Racing, N1) provides excellent anti-foaming and viscosity characteristics under heavy cyclic rate, giving you repeatable damping feel and performance for the life of the damper.

advance_needle_technology

ADVANCE NEEDLE provides wide-range damping force change per click.

Proprietary damper oil exhibits excellent anti-foaming and viscosity characteristics for stable damping force under extended use.

We will still retain our exclusive damper coatings, too. Our shot blasted, zinc plated high strength STKM13C steel damper bodies are treated to our patented 2-layer/1-bake powdercoating procedure. This gives our dampers excellent protection against corrosion in harsh environments, especially in areas with heavy snowfall. Our patented ZT coating is applied to our threaded adjustment tubes (inside and out), and contribute to smooth height adjustment, and outstanding adhesion to the steel threads. This ZT coating will not peel or flake off even after repeated adjustment. This is due to the ZT coatings’ low friction coefficient. Essentially, it acts as a dry lubricant. That makes every external component of the steel bodied damper completely protected from the unforgiving environments we subject them to, and we expect our dampers to perform at their very best year after year after year…

the bare surface of our dampers are treated to a double shot peening adding surface strength and also prepares it for zinc coating.

We’ve also updated our spring seats and seat locks for increased durability under heavy vehicle loads and smooth height adjustment. Instead of using a rubber spring seat, we’ve added a Delrin thrust washer atop the new, wider spring seats.

Coilover springs will continue to be made from cold-wound SAE 9254 Vanadium alloy. After cold winding and setting, we heat treat the springs prior to grinding end coils to proper dimensions. Before powdercoating, we subject every spring to double shot-peening which aids in increased spring life and fatigue strength. Some coilover applications may have application-specific spring windings and shapes, such as our barrel springs or taper springs.

We will also continue to provide our 1-year warranty against manufacturer’s defects. Even at this new starting price, we will stand behind our products!

So now you’ve got the highest available quality and performance at an extremely low price, and backed with a manufacturers warranty. Unfortunately, we still haven’t made it easier for you to decide with TEIN suspension system you want. So we ask you to please give our sales staff a call at 562-861-9161 for assistance in getting you into the proper TEIN suspension kit for your needs!

Toyota Sienna STREET FLEX Dampers

Little interest in the past had come for damper kits on minivans in the U.S. If any inquiries, most were for the Honda Odyssey 95-98 RA1 and Toyota Previa (Estima) TCR20/21 90-97.

honda-odyssey-ssu1-22

Previa

Many years later and minivan interest has gone up. Why? Utility. Small families need a vehicle with ample room, easy access, and convertibility. However, they need something more economical than the typical Chevy Suburban. The minivan provides that. And these days, minivans are equipped with more than just power windows and am/fm radio. Now, you can find full entertainment systems, passenger HVAC controls, and even individual seats (compared to bench seats). Minivans are starting to look way better than the Conversion Vans of the past (WAY BETTER). So many vehicle manufacturers have learned to grow with the trend, and now there are many minivan offerings.

In Japan, and some other countries in Asia, minivans make a lot of sense, especially for the aforementioned reasons. If you only have room for one vehicle, why not make it a true utility vehicle? As we have been told, minivans are even popular with the younger generation. So, this eventually led to an aftermarket for the minivan crowd. TEIN has been manufacturing damper kits for minivans for years. One of our most popular, but now discontinued, was our HYBRID DAMPER kit, which looked similar to a SUPER STREET/STREET ADVANCE setup but had a hydraulically controlled lower bracket to adjust ride height ~40mm up/down. This gave lowered minivan owners extra ground clearance, especially important for owners who had minivans with body kits (true story; you can see some kitted vans in these pics).

The minivan may not necessarily be badged as the “Soccer Mom” vehicle of choice, with SUV’s, and even crossover SUV’s, having continued to grow in popularity in the U.S., but they’ve been catching on in the U.S. One common inquiry we receive is for the Toyota Sienna. Consumers asked for damper kit availability for this application. Previously, another JDM vehicle model (Toyota Alphard) damper kit had been confirmed to work with the Sienna. However it did have some slight complications with the rear damper mounting assembly angle causing noise issues.

Wald-Toyota_Alphard_2009_800x600_wallpaper_03

Finally it looks like we may have hit the nail on the head, as damper kits are now being produced for the 2011+ Sienna’s. The product was designed and tested in our TEIN Hong Kong branch. The vehicle was actually an imported U.S. model Sienna, and the current Sienna is also being imported to other countries, including Japan, which gave them a chance to also confirm testing. With these considerations in its favor, we have decided to release a STREET FLEX damper kit.

STFA.Sienna

The STREET FLEX offers a full-length adjustable body, damping force adjustable with EDFC compatibility, and Hardened Rubber Style Uppermount assembly for the front allowing for an increase in steering response and handling compared to the OE mounts, as well as noise dampening for added comfort when compared to coilover systems with the Pillowball Style Uppermount assemblies.  As the “STREET FLEX” name implies it was designed for the streets which means a comfortable yet sporty ride for a daily driven minivan.

So now it would be a fight between moms and dads as to who gets to drive low down spec minivan to soccer practice or the grocery store. For further details on this kit please use the weblink below, or contact us direct to 562-861-9161.

TEIN Authorized Dealer Specials on STREET FLEX Coilovers!

Last December we ran a special through our authorized dealers, which we were happy to see doing really well!. For 2015, we’ve added some new changes, including reduced MSRP on our STREET BASIS & STREET ADVANCE coilovers.

However, we see that there is also a great demand for our STREET FLEX coilovers, and many of our authorized dealers were asking if we could extend the extra discount we were giving them.

So, we are happy to keep our STREET FLEX special going on from now until March 31, 2015!!!

STFA FA5

If you are new to our products and interested in knowing more about our STREET FLEX coilovers, we’ve designed them to be a full-featured coilover package giving the customer most of the necessary components for a completely adjustable suspension. These features include:

– Full-length adjustment (ride height is separate of spring preload).

– Twin tube damper structure, providing maximum damper stroke length in a shortened damper body.

– 16-way damping force adjustment (rebound only), using our ADVANCE NEEDLE technology providing wide-range damping force change per click setting.

– Included upper mounts (most macpherson strut type dampers are camber adjustable for fronts).

– ZT coated threaded body providing smooth adjustment for ride height and spring preload, as well as excellent corrosion resistance in all conditions.

– Patented “2 Layer/1 Bake” powdercoating (including shot blasted, zinc coated steel damper bodies and brackets).

– EDFC Series compatible (EDFC II, EDFC ACTIVE, EDFC ACTIVE PRO).

– Fully serviceable (damper overhaul and revalve services available through TEIN USA, Inc.).

– 1 year warranty against any manufacturer’s defects.

While designed for street use, we’ve valved the STREET FLEX dampers aggressively for the best sporty ride feel while still maintaining a great balance in ride comfort and high performance handling. For those looking to eventually take their car to the track, the STREET FLEX coilovers are a great starting point! Combine the features of our STREET FLEX dampers with one of our EDFC ACTIVE PRO setups and you’ll have a completely active suspension kit that adjusts damping according to your driving conditions!! These features, typically found on high-end sport and luxury vehicles can now be had at reasonable prices for your favorite vehicle!

Unfortunately, we cannot disclose the details of the STREET FLEX special directly to our customers. They are, without a doubt, one of the deepest discounts we’ve offered. So we highly recommend getting a hold of one of our authorized dealers to find out pricing for your specific application!

Please check our Dealer List to find the authorized TEIN dealer in your area, or give us a call at 562-861-9161 for assistance in finding a retailer!!!

We’re In The Anime Business Now!

No, not really. I’m just kidding.

But, we did put a short cartoon out regarding our EDFC Active Pro. In the cartoon, it shows the benefits of active damping force while going around a long sweeper.

Although it is a very short video, what it is trying to explain is how our EDFC Active  Control Unit will make adjustments based on the vehicle’s dynamics. Within the controller we have an accelerometer that adjusts damping based on g-force loading. There is also an available speed-based damping force setting using either the optional GPS Kit (especially for the EDFC Active) or by obtaining the speed signal from the vehicle’s ECU (this feature is available on the EDFC Active Pro only).

In the video, the driver who starts falling behind complains about roll understeer. Initially, he believes the leading car has their suspension tuned only for low-speed damping (which would mean a compromise in high speed damping force control). However, with EDFC Active/EDFC Active Pro, we’re able to negate the side effects of such one-setting tuning. Now you can have a suspension kit fully adaptable to your driving conditions!

We’ll be putting out more videos to show the other benefits of our system and why a racing enthusiast such as yourself may find our product suitable for you!

In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding our EDFC Active and/or EDFC Active Pro, please give our sales staff a call at 562-861-9161 or email us at tus_sales@tein.com for assistance! We’ll be glad to answer any questions you may have!

We Like 4×4’s, Too!

If you follow our TEIN Facebook page, then you probably have already seen some photos of what looks to be some off-road vehicles. You were probably wondering what this had to do with TEIN, a company synonymous with lowering Hondas, or drifting, or Time Attack, or basically anything other than 4×4’s.

For the most part, you’re right. But, if you think about it, it’s not a far cry from TEIN’s start in the suspension business. Founded by a couple of rally competitors, TEIN knew there would be a demand for the perfect suspension for road conditions considered to be less than ideal for a daily commute (but for some reason perfect for racing). Considering the pounding that rally cars take, a properly built rally suspension can make a world of difference in performance.

Our Group N Dampers were developed directly through involvement in domestic and international rally (FIA PWRC, ERC, Rally America).

I guess it would be a natural progression for us to venture into the 4×4 suspension market, which is surprisingly very strong, especially overseas.

The pics that we shared are related to our involvement in the China Cross-Country Raid rally (think Paris-Dakar rally as a comparison).

Here’s a pic of one of the 4×4 developments we created for a customer.

However, some setups are a bit more gnarly, requiring something more unique. Like this double damper setup.

Being that this type of racing was relatively new to us, we had engineers fly out to China to do testing with the teams and help them develop the suspension.

CCR 5 (Custom)

Other than this Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero, we also built suspension for a VW Tuareg

CCR 1 (Custom)

CCR 2 (Custom)

I also know that we’re putting our EDFC Active Pro to the test with a few of these 4×4’s. Talk about having the ultimate advantage- fully active suspension under some of the harshest conditions!

Although a new experience for us, the demands are still relatively the same, just with varying degrees of complexity. So, 4×4 suspension is definitely within the realm of possibilities for us. However, I must make mention that we do not manufacture leaf springs or torsion springs. Through our Specialized Damper Service and our involvement in motorsports, TEIN always looks to bring our very own technological advancements in getting the best out of every racing environment.

TEchnical INnovation- that’s what we’re all about!

Event Updates from Geoff Stoneback!

Geoff has been very good at following up with all of his sponsors after every event. Goes to show he’s not just in drifting for himself, or simply for personal gain. That’s something for us to admire, as we know Geoff already works hard at what he does, and he also has a wife and baby added to his personal life. I’m glad that he can find some time in between all of that to let us know how he’s doing!

Here’s what Geoff has had to say about the year in Formula Drift so far:

HMS 7 (Custom)
Coming off of the two rounds of Formula Drift, we were sitting 29th in the standings. We felt positive going into Round 3 Homestead-Miami since every round we were improving on and off track. The car set up was getting dialed in more as I felt more comfortable in the car. Since this was a new venue, I felt we had a great opportunity to put on an amazing show. On top of the regular Formula Drift series, Pro 2 had its first round of the new series. With many pros and cons of running two events in one weekend, we decided the extra seat time will pay off.”

HMS 3 (Custom)

Geoff certainly knows how to lay down some smoke!

“We would have a full three days of non stop drifting, which would really put the team and I to the test. Going into paid practice on Thursday, we had four hours of Pro 1 practice, straight to the Pro 2 drivers meeting and finally into Pro 2 practice and qualifying. With the added seat time we were able to dial the car in as well as our line on the track. We felt confident going into qualifying and our first run landed us in first place with a score of 74. It wouldn’t hold for too long, we were knocked into the second qualifying place by Carl Rydquist with a score of 76. Our second qualifying run, we wow’d the judges but being a couple feet off clip 3 landed us a score of 75, still stuck in the 2nd qualifying spot. Thursday was complete!”

HMS 2 (Custom)

Easily gapping his competitor!

“Heading into Friday, we had another busy day of qualifying for Pro 1 and then top 16 in Pro 2. After the drivers meeting, it was officially announced we ended up qualifying 21st in Pro 1 and were really excited that we were in both of the shows! We went right into Pro 2 practice for an hour and directly into top 16. In our first battle we were supposed to face Ron Ewerth, but due to mechanical issues we got the Bi-run into the top 8. In the top 8 I faced Dave Briggs, an Achilles Radial teammate, also a Pro 1 driver. We laid down a solid lead run giving us the advantage. On our chase run, Dave spun around the 2nd inner clip giving us the win. In the top 4, we faced a local Florida native, Jeremy Lowe. This was going to be a tough battle because I have personally driven with him before and know he is a tough competitor. We had another amazing lead run, which Jeremy straightened hard into clip 2 giving us the advantage. On our chase run, we stuck our front bumper to his rear wheels and got the win. Moving on to the top two, we would face our good friend, Nate Hamilton. Nate and I have battled once before, in 2012 at Buffalo XDC where I got the win. I knew he wanted to get the friendly revenge, but I wouldn’t let that happen. I led first and laid down the solid runs i’ve been doing all day, gaping Nate off the line and throughout the whole course. On our chase run I laid hard into the throttle into inner clip 2, putting the car door to door and amazing the judges, drivers and fans! We stuck to his door and got the win in the first ever Pro 2 series event, Friday complete!

Saturday was the big day! We showed that we were able to adapt in tandem and on the track. The guys at R/T tuning dialed in the car from yesterdays abuse and we were 100% ready to get into the top 16. Every event we want to better ourselves from last time. We qualified, which was great, but it was time to get our first win as a Pro 1 Formula Drift driver. Coming off of our momentum and Fridays win in Pro 2, we raised tons of eyebrows and had everyone asking how are we so fast. We knew we were extremely fast off the line and we needed to keep that momentum going in our first battle against Odi Bakchis. We had a great follow run, with one correction with our lead run on point, but we had a OMT call. On our second follow run, we put the car closer to Odi giving him no room for error. On our lead run we had an amazing line with aggression, not allowing Odi to keep up. We finally broke out of the top 32 and into the top 16! For my first ever top 16, I decided to take my wife, Linda out as my umbrella girl. She has been there since day one and I knew it would mean a lot to us in our first top 16!
One of the coolest feelings to date was riding out with my Achilles Radial teammates Kenny Moen and Robbie Nishida. It will be a memory that I will never forget. With the ceremonies complete it was back to the focus of our next battle with Forrest Wang. I was excited to go against one of the best privateers, as I really look up to Forrest, but it was time to take him out. We had our follow run first and kept on his door throughout the whole course. On our lead run I launched hard and left Forrest at the line, unable to catch up. We were awarded the win and made it to The Great 8!

Our next battle was with Matt Fields. We had a great follow run, but the car bogged down on power a bit. We added fuel to the cell, thinking we had a fuel slosh problem and went out for our lead run. We left the line hard and had a decent gap, but going into inner clip 2 the car lost all power, we straightened, dropped a tire and reinitiated. We were called for a OMT and brought the car back to Hot grid. We checked the data logs and found that our car was throwing fuel into the tune to make up for the O2 sensors that were not functioning correctly. We went back to the line, hungry for the win. We were one more battle closer to the top 4! Unfortunately on our second follow run, we stayed to close to Matt on inner clip 2 and 3. I switched back to quickly running door to door, but Matt threw tons of angle and scrubbed a bit of speed and I tapped him just hard enough to make him spin. We were at a huge disadvantage, but we still remained positive! I did my lead run but dropped a tire. Although we still had a couple car lengths on Matt, at the end, Matt got the win and we finished 8th place in Pro 1.”

HMS 6 (Custom)

“After we were knocked out, I was bummed about being too aggressive and beating myself, but the fans definitely made the team and I feel better. Many drivers came up to congratulate us on a great round in Miami! With a 1st place podium at the first Pro 2 event and finishing 8th in Pro 1 was a very successful weekend for the team and I!

We currently have the car back at R/T tuning and are making sure it is 100% ready for our “hometown” round at Wall, NJ The Gauntlet!”

HMS 4 (Custom)

Two TEIN equipped drift cars battling it out!

With Geoff facing some stiff competition, not to mention well-funded teams, we’re glad to see his racing talent really shine. He’s making the best with what he’s got. It’s great to see him in the points, and with the first win in the inaugural Pro 2 series, we’re sure that the only place Geoff has to go from there is UP!!!

TEIN USA Delivers to West Coast Customs

It’s not often that you get to see TEIN on the tv screen unless it’s regarding Rally America, Formula Drift, FIA European Rally Championship, or something else along those lines. Even then, we tend to keep to ourselves tucked away in our own little pocket. Instead, we focus on manufacturing the products that continue to make the motorsports world go round.

But, every now and then we’ll be invited to participate on some television programs. Previously, we took part in the televised series Fine Tuned. This was a very similar approach to the show Overhaulin’, but aimed around the “tuner car” demographic. That was actually kinda fun!

Our most recent television appearance was with the West Coast Custom crew, taking part on a Scion FR-S build for Ryan Friedlinghaus Jr..

Since we already had product available for the FR-S, and since it’s a vehicle that continues to do very well for us, it was kind of a no-brainer to participate on this project. We had just launched the newer Street Flex coilovers and we also had EDFC Active. This was a great opportunity to get this new product out to West Coast Customs.

When we were contacted by Scott at West Coast Customs, we quickly got the parts ready and dropped it off to them. It’s funny- the whole process of taking the product to them and explaining what we brought them was just as shown on tv. I guess it is truly a reality! Haha!

Anyway, after a quick rundown of what we were providing them, we let them get at it by themselves. The project car was only beginning and they had a lot of areas to knock out before tackling the suspension.

Crunch time to get the car built before going to paint. Our friend Troy from Five Axis here helping them get the Five:AD body kit installed.

Fortunately, as many of you customer’s know, our products are a relatively straightforward endeavor right out of the box. The Street Flex is a complete swap of the factory dampers, also including their own upper mounts. It simply requires unbolting the stock stuff and bolting up our coilovers, then tightening everything to the correct torque specs (and final alignment to be done afterwards). Looks like the WCC guys didn’t have any issues getting that done!

West Coast Customs posted up photos of the car on their Facebook, following the airing of the episode on this build and the SEMA Show launch.

Initial Review: EDFC Active Pro

IMG_7068

When discussing the original EDFC, I sometimes would run into some wishful individuals wishing that a system would have the capability of adjusting itself.  When we released the EDFC Active, our electronic damping system which allows the front and rear dampers to be adjusted automatically based on the vehicle speed and G forces applied.  A lot were impressed and in awe, but still we had individuals who complained that it was still not good enough.  Now with the release of the EDFC Active Pro, no one can say a  word.

Nissan R35 GT-R Suspension

We’ve already had our popular Super Racing coilover kit available for the R35 GT-R. The TEIN group was quick to jump into the development on that car’s suspension from the day it was released internationally. However, we knew that the sales of the GT-R wouldn’t necessarily take the world over right away. After all, it is a relatively expensive car.

Now in 2014 we’re looking to go back to redeveloping our already race proven setup.

SRC R35 001 (Custom)

SRC R35 004 (Custom)

With pre-owned GT-R’s now available at somewhat more reasonable prices, new owners are now able to put some money into enhancing an already well-balanced factory super car. Leave it to us to find a way to improve its suspension, which is what we do anyway!

For this year, we’re working with our good friends at Evasive Motorsports, who have recently acquired a GT-R. We’re pleased to see that they contacted us for suspension assistance. As aforementioned, we were looking to redo the damper valving and possibly spring rates. So it was good timing for us!

evasive r35 (Custom)

While it’s great to be working with Evasive Motorsports on the Super Racing development, we also look to put our newly released and available EDFC Active Pro to work on this car. TEIN Japan has already received praise on this new EDFC offering, with drivers reporting drastic improvement in driving and reduced lap times (one claim of -30 seconds lap time sounded too good to be true, but we’ll take it!). Now we’re looking to get feedback from our North American customers.
