DrivingLine.com Gets a TEIN Overhaul

Like that title picture??? Pretty gross, and this is what can happen when you wait to long to service your TEIN dampers! LOL. Actually, that’d be more like worst-case scenario.

We recently got to work with Jonathan Wong of Driving Line, an online magazine focusing on all aspects automotive related.

Several years back, when Jonathan was still at Super Street magazine, we had provided him some of our SS-P coilovers for his ED Civic Hatchback project, a vehicle that he wanted to maintain a lot of JDM appeal. During that time, we had revalved the dampers for more track use.

DL-TEIN-EDIT-8

Now, Jonathan uses the car for occasional street use, and comfort is more of a concern than track-like handling. It was an ideal time for him to come in, get his dampers revalved, and also see what that type of service entails. *The title picture isn’t his actual damper, btw. He does a good job of maintaining his ride.

DL-TEIN-EDIT-7

Although we talk quite a bit about our overhaul service, Jonathan points out something very true- not a lot of customers are aware of this service. With some of the new coilover lines we’re introducing, such as the FLEX Z, STREET ADVANCE Z, & STREET BASIS Z, which don’t require rebuilds, chances are that customers will never really know what else we can do with our existing products. It isn’t uncommon for customers to get our kits second-hand, and most don’t know much about our brand after that.

As for all TEIN suspension owners out there, we must mention that there is no set rule for when a damper should be sent in for servicing. Some customers may send in their set well before 30,000 miles of use. We’ve seen others come in with well over 100,000 miles of use. We do recommend inspecting your suspension every 30k miles, though. Really, it’s up to the customer to inspect and maintain their suspension. Surprisingly enough, simply keeping the dampers clean may extend the life of the dampers. An area prone to causing damper leaks is at the top of the damper body (not the piston shaft). At the top of the damper body is a dust seal where the piston shaft slides past as it functions. Spraying this area with water, or even with WD-40 or something similar, helps keep the dust seal debris-free and prevents it from getting damaged and eventually leaking any of the gas charge. Doing this also keeps the piston shaft from scoring from such debris. A damaged piston shaft can be anywhere from $40 and up depending on the model (on top of the base overhaul fee).  If you’re doing this type of maintenance, it’s also good to inspect the rubber dust boot and polyurethane bump stop for any damage. They can easily be replaced and are a good insurance to maintaining a long lasting damper.

Here’s R&D Assistant Chris A. disassembling a FLEX damper for service.

We’re glad that Jonathan was able to see himself what we could do. Definitely some good insight for customers with our products and to know what we can do for them!!!

A Cleverly Mounted Defi Advance ZD!!

Not too long ago, we were contacted by Mike Bratcher of Riseful. He was really interested in Defi’s Advance ZD unit as a solution for metering his engine without the clutter of gauge dials mounted on and around his dash.

He later followed up with us, wanting to order more Advance ZD units, and it seemed that it was because of his unique mounting solution on his NSX that it generated some buzz.

As mentioned earlier, Mike wanted to eliminate a cluster of gauges on his dash, preferring to keep with his car’s subtle interior design cues. His solution? Mounting the Advance ZD where the stereo screen. This of course meant the removal of his stereo screen, but since his died out, it made a perfect location for his custom mounting idea.

Here are some pictures that Mr. Bratcher shared on NSXprime.com:

A very well excecuted job, Mr. Bratcher!!!

Interested in mouting your Advance ZD in similar fashion? Mr. Bratched seems to have documented this installation pretty well on NSXprime. Check out his post!

Another Set of TEIN Specialized Dampers Made!!!

Honestly, our Specialized Damper program hasn’t really taken off like it has overseas. However, there are a few customers stateside that have interest in getting a completely custom suspension made by us, instead of having to piece together their own coilover using damper inserts and some spring setup they’ve found online. Nothing necessarily wrong with that setup. In fact, it’s quite common since that is pretty much the only option available for consumers.

We, on the other hand, pride ourselves in designing kits specifically for each vehicle application and to the customer’s specifications.

Not too long ago, Troy from Five Axis Designs, the guy responsible for many of Scion’s prototypes, as well as some of Toyota’s prototypes (like the FT-1 concept), contacted us about his personal project. He’s currently working on a Datsun 240z.

His car is all original, including paint, and Troy wants to avoid doing anything really crazy to the car. In fact, he’s planning on keeping the paint as-is, even with a little fade after all these years! It’s also a relatively low mileage car!!!

Anyway, Troy had an extra set of factory suspension that had damper inserts. He wanted to get a set of TEIN dampers made after he saw one of our posts on a similar project TEIN Japan posted on Facebook. Troy essentially wanted the same thing. And since TEIN USA really wants to show what we are capable of doing for customers stateside (even though the manufacturing still has to come out of TEIN Japan’s factory). So we ordered up a set for Troy!

For this particular application, we still needed the factory suspension since we needed to cut and remove the damper inserts, then send the factory assemblies to TEIN Japan to have the bottom front spindles and rear hubs retrofitted onto our dampers. This means that the factory components must be inspected and have to be in serviceable/usable condition (in other words, TEIN is not responsible if they receive components out of factory specifications).

A few months later, we received the completely assembled coilover kit from TEIN Japan. Below are some pictures:

First, we took the factory suspension and inspected them. Again, this should be done by the customer prior to sending them to us (and before we send to TEIN Japan).

SPD (OEM S30 Dampers) 008
For the rear factory dampers, we had to press out the wheel bearings from the hub.

SPD (OEM S30 Dampers) 002

SPD (OEM S30 Dampers) 003 SPD (OEM S30 Dampers) 006

After sending to TEIN Japan and having them work on retrofitting a completely customized damper setup, this is what we ended up with:

SPD (S30 SSM Dampers) 001

Each Damper is individually serialized.

SPD (S30 SSM Dampers) 007

This helps us whenever the customer may send them back to us for either rebuilding or revalving the dampers, especially if they decide to change spring rates, or if they just want to alter the handling characteristics of their dampers.

SPD (S30 SSM Dampers) 013

Also, if the customer plans to reorder another set of the same dampers, we can refer to our catalog data from this part number and determine what components we used, what spring rates we used, as well as the damper specifications we used just for this customer.

We’re looking forward to updates from Troy, as he continues to do a mild restoration to this car! Stay tuned for those updates!!!

If you’re in the market for custom suspension, whether it be because no one offers a suspension kit for your vehicle or if you need something that isn’t exactly like the factory suspension, or if you just need some customized components like upper mounts only or custom wound springs, give us a ring at 562-861-9161 and speak with one of our sales staff. We’d be happy to help you in creating your very own TEIN damper kit made to suit your needs!!!

Our In-House Engineer’s personal Scion FR-S

While most of us are pretty much desk jockeys here at TEIN USA (just kidding!), some of our staff enjoy spending their free time at the local race track. Local to us southern Californians is something like a 1 hour drive on average.

One such racing enthusiast is our very own in-house engineer, Shuichiro (a.k.a.- “GQ”). He occasionally takes one of his daily drivers to the track. He’s currently driving his 2013 Scion FR-S. Prior to this, he had a well-prepared Honda S2000. However, there was one occassion where he tried to get all environmentally friendly and drive a Toyota Prius. Dunno what he was trying to do there. He was probably all like “I wanna be like Brad Pitt” or something. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still a true race enthusiast. That hybrid car stuff was just a phase we’re trying to forget about…

He was told to "look natural". This is his idea of "natural". So GQ.

He was told to “look natural”. This is his idea of “natural”. So GQ.

But yes, he’s an enthusiasts. Whenever he has the chance, he’ll prepare his car for track duty. Being that he works at TEIN, that means he has access to any one of our suspension kits.

We are actually making his car our guinea pig for damper development, for both new product and experimental damper valving. Since it is easier to do so with our 2-way adjustable setups, we have him run our Super Racing coilover. Not a bad hookup for making him our crash test dummy! I mean, test driver. In the name of science!!!

The current build sheet for his FR-S is as follows:

*Exterior
Front lip spoiler: Revolution
Side skirt: Downforce Evasive (exclusive model)
GT wing: Voltex Type1S
Duck bill: Five Axis
Fender Spoiler: TRD

*Interior
Seat: Recaro SP-G
Harness: TAKATA Race 4

*Footwork
Coilover: TEIN SRC (Ft9kg/Rr10kg)
Wheel: Advan GT 18×9.5 +40
Brakes: AP Racing front big brake kit w/ 6 piston calipers
Brake pads: Project Mu

*Drive train
LSD: ATS&Across

*Engine
Intake: Revolution
Throttle Body: Revolution
Exhaust manifold: Fujitsubo SuperEX
Front pipe: Berk
Cat back: Fujitsubo Authorize R Type S (w/ burnt tip)
Oil cooler: Greddy
ECU: Ecutek

A very simple build. Nothing too over-the-top, and definitely a good platform for us to continue damper development on. In fact, the FR-S/BRZ has been one of the best selling of new vehicle platforms for us in terms of suspension sales!

shu bw

So, if you see him at events, especially around Buttonwillow, don’t hesitate to say hi to him. Better yet, prepare a bunch of technical questions to ask him in case you run into him! He loves that kind of stuff. Apparently.

A GoPro View of the TEIN Japan Factory!

We’re obviously a very proud group of employees. Some of us have had the privilege of being able to see TEIN Japan’s manufacturing processes first-hand. In fact, a couple of our employees were part of TEIN Japan’s staff prior to them coming to the U.S. to work at TEIN USA, Inc.’s Operations.

We’ve never claimed to invent the shock absorber (which is not aptly named, mind you; “damper” is more appropriate). Instead, we’re proud to say that we’ve manufactured high performance suspensions using our own engineering, using some of the best manufacturing equipment and materials, and even pioneering our own manufacturing techniques and features unique to TEIN products. We’ve come from very humble beginnings since 1985. Now, 30 years later, we’re looking to make our presence known!

In the beginning of 2014, our factory in Yokohama moved to a new facility, still within Yokohama. This newly built and very advanced facility was an undertaking made specifically to meet the production demands our products have gained over the years.

But, it goes beyond just having a new facility that allows us to ramp up production. We’re a green company! That’s obvious by color, but we’re referring to our operational procedures. Like many manufacturers, we’re faced with certain dilemmas that affect our environment. So, we addressed this matter when the new Yokohama factory was being built. We now utilize solar energy to help power our equipment, we use special paint/coating procedures (even developing our own equipment) to reduce air pollution, and we also recycle our scrap steel and aluminum post manufacturing. We feel these are only a small steps, but  steps in the right direction into maintaining and protecting the world we so love to drive on.

Check out the video!

Now, for 2015, we’ve got another new manufacturing facility already set up in China! TEIN IS GROWING, and it is all thanks to you, our customers, our friends, who demand the best products their money can buy!

Look forward for more updates from us! 2015 will be a great year with so many new products!

MotoIQ Visits TEIN USA, Inc.!

Our friends at MotoIQ decided to stop in and have their Type FLEX coilovers for their Project Supra rebuilt! While they were here, we gave them an inside view of our overhaul process. Not necessarily something we allow the public to see first-hand. But, we are talking about MotoIQ here, guys that like to nerd the hell out on car stuff. We couldn’t easily keep the door closed on them! Lol!!!

This Project Supra of theirs is pretty nuts to begin with. So we were glad to see that they wanted to continue the use of their older Type FLEX coilovers. However, we thought it would be a great idea to update the internals to the newer STREET FLEX setup. So, we had our in-house engineers work closely with the MotoIQ staff to get their dampers to the lastest specifications from TEIN!!

MIQ TEIN 6

We had our R&D staff take them through our overhaul process and show, from start to finish, what goes into our rebuilds.

After a disassemble of external components (lower brackets, seat locks, upper mounts, springs, dust boots, & bump stops), we can start complete teardown of the damper itself. Our dampers require some unique tools for some parts of disassembly, which is why we do not offer rebuild kits to the public. We ask that all customers send their dampers to us for servicing.

MIQ TEIN 2

Once completely torn down, we can get to work on the internals. The piston shaft is broken down into several components. Once we can loosen the lower nut on the piston shaft, the piston valve assembly, including all shims and washers, can be removed. These components will be replaced with new ones. Whenever possible, we want to keep rebuild costs as low as possible for our customers, so we will try to reuse components that are still in excellent condition.

Once we can completely assess the condition of all components, we can then get to work on rebuilding. In MotoIQ’s case, we had to make some modifications to make the newest STREET FLEX setup work with their coilovers.

MIQ TEIN 3

After all the necessary modifications are completed, we completely assemble the dampers, fill with nitrogen,  then run them on our damper dyno and make sure they meet performance specification.

MIQ TEIN 5

All other external components can then be reinstalled and the completed dampers sent back to the customer! All that’s left is to install, check/fix alignment, and enjoy!

We look forward to the next installment from MotoIQ on their Project Supra! They also have our EDFC Active to test out, so we’re sure they’re busy nerding away with that!

Please note that our overhaul and revalve service is available to the public. So, if you have any questions on our overhaul services, please give us a call at 562-861-9161 for more info! We’re glad to help!!!

In the meantime, please visit MotoIQ for some great technical information and follow along on their Project Supra build!

We’re In The Anime Business Now!

No, not really. I’m just kidding.

But, we did put a short cartoon out regarding our EDFC Active Pro. In the cartoon, it shows the benefits of active damping force while going around a long sweeper.

Although it is a very short video, what it is trying to explain is how our EDFC Active  Control Unit will make adjustments based on the vehicle’s dynamics. Within the controller we have an accelerometer that adjusts damping based on g-force loading. There is also an available speed-based damping force setting using either the optional GPS Kit (especially for the EDFC Active) or by obtaining the speed signal from the vehicle’s ECU (this feature is available on the EDFC Active Pro only).

In the video, the driver who starts falling behind complains about roll understeer. Initially, he believes the leading car has their suspension tuned only for low-speed damping (which would mean a compromise in high speed damping force control). However, with EDFC Active/EDFC Active Pro, we’re able to negate the side effects of such one-setting tuning. Now you can have a suspension kit fully adaptable to your driving conditions!

We’ll be putting out more videos to show the other benefits of our system and why a racing enthusiast such as yourself may find our product suitable for you!

In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding our EDFC Active and/or EDFC Active Pro, please give our sales staff a call at 562-861-9161 or email us at tus_sales@tein.com for assistance! We’ll be glad to answer any questions you may have!

Ziptie Dynowerks Reviews STREET FLEX Dampers for Subaru Legacy Outback

You read that right- a Subaru Outback. We actually never fitted our suspension on the Outback variant of any Subaru, Legacy or Impreza. We are aware of the various differences there are, mainly the overall ride height being much higher on these models. However, all suspension pick-up points seem to be the same.

Ryan and George from Ziptie Dynowerks contacted us with a rush request. One of their guys at the shop needed suspension for his Subaru Legacy Outback for a weekend track day event. This was on Wednesday, so we had to get the kit out to them as soon as possible.

After all was said and done, they decided to put up a nice review on our product! We appreciate getting this from them! Check it out when you have a chance!!!

Beware of Poor Quality Springs!

We’ve put a great video out on YouTube showcasing the effects of a poor quality spring compared to our own springs:

Goes to show that not all products are created equal. We spend a lot of resources for our research and development departments,  and for good reason. We’ve built a great reputation of offering high quality performance parts at pretty reasonable prices. We have to uphold that reputation, and to do so means constant product development.

It’s sad to know that there are “high performance” suspension manufacturers that are mass producing components without ever testing them. We put each and every one of our designs through rigorous testing to ensure their reliability and performance. Everything we design must pass our extensive tests before it ever reaches you, our customer.

I’d rather spare you the whole “you get what you pay for” speech because, in some cases, the consequences of not knowing the first time around could mean your safety, and potentially your life. So, take it from us- if you really want something, don’t choose what you think is the second or third best option just because it will save you some money. Purchase from a reputable manufacturer. Purchase with confidence. Most of all, purchase wisely. If you don’t have the money now, you should save up for what you really want. Or, just shop around and find a great price from one of any of our authorized TEIN dealers.
